Home Modifications

Home modifications are critical for enabling seniors to age safely and independently, but numerous challenges make this difficult. Many U.S. homes, built decades ago, lack accessibility features, with only 10% considered "aging-ready." Common barriers include steep staircases, narrow doorways, high-threshold bathtubs, and poor lighting, which contribute to the two-thirds of falls among adults over 65 that occur at home annually, costing over $50 billion in medical expenses. Chronic conditions, affecting over 85% of seniors, such as arthritis or diabetes, further complicate mobility and daily tasks like bathing or cooking. Limited family support, due to smaller U.S. households and geographic distance, unlike multigenerational caregiving in some Asian cultures, adds to the challenge of maintaining independence. This is the gap that  Wellness Access is fulfilling by leveraging current trends in universal design and technology guide our approach. These modifications address mobility limitations and chronic health needs, empowering seniors to live autonomously.
